What is press brake role in metal fabrication?

April 15, 2022

Hydraulic Press Brake is a machine used for bending sheet metal and metal plate, most commonly sheet metal. It forms predetermined bends by clamping the workpiece between a matching top tool and bottom die.

Typically, two C-frames form the sides of the press brake, connected to a table at the bottom and on a movable beam at the top. The bottom tool is mounted on the table, with the top tool mounted on the upper beam.

The types and capacities of Press Brake vary greatly, from manual operations to CNC-controlled press brakes which offer higher precision and automation. These machines play a critical role in metal fabrication, allowing for complex design and high levels of customization in metal forming processes.

Main Components

The main components of a press brake are crucial for its function, each playing a specific role in bending sheet metal to precise angles and shapes.

Ram

The ram serves as the moving part of the press brake that applies force to the metal sheet. Mounted on the ram is the punch, which contacts the metal and executes the bend.

Die

The die is the stationary part that forms the metal as the ram presses down. The specific shape of the die determines the angle and type of bend produced.

Back Gauge

The back gauge functions as a positioning system, allowing precise control over where the bend is made. It consists of fingers or stoppers that can be set to specific distances from the die, resulting in accurate and repeatable bends.

Control System

Press brakes are equipped with a control system that governs their operation. It controls the movement of the ram, back gauge, and other functions. These systems range from simple manual controls to complex computer numerical controls (CNC) for precision and programmability.

Industrial Applications

Various industries rely on press brakes for their metal forming needs.

Key sectors include:

Aerospace: Manufacturing of aircraft components, such as panels and chassis parts.

Automotive: Production of frames, brackets, and body panels.

Construction: Creation of beams, frames, and HVAC systems.

Marine: Fabrication of structural elements for ships and submarines.

Manufacturing: Making of appliances, electronics, and machinery components.

Safety Measures

When operating a press brake, it's essential to implement strict safety measures to prevent accidents. Safety equipment and adherence to operational protocols are fundamental aspects to ensure a secure working environment.

Safety Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

1.Gloves: Thick, cut-resistant gloves to protect against sharp materials.

2.Safety Glasses: To shield eyes from flying debris.

3.Light Curtains: Infrared beams that stop the machine if interrupted.
